A taste of Day 1: Catch the replay

Welcome. Anger rarely arrives all at once. It builds while we replay what happened. Over six short days, we'll practise catching it early. Today, we simply notice the replay.

“He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,”—in those who harbour such thoughts hatred will never cease.Traditionally attributed to the Buddha · Dhammapada, verse 3
F. Max Müller, 1881

This verse describes a mind that keeps retelling a grievance. It isn't really about the event. It's about the retelling, and each retelling feeds the heat. We can't always stop being wronged. But we can sometimes notice the moment the replay begins, and that moment is where a little choice lives. The practice isn't to suppress anything. It's to catch the tape running, and quietly say to yourself: replaying.

Try the reflection

Bring to mind something small that irritated you in the last few days. Not your biggest grievance, and you don't need to relive it. Just watch for the sentences your mind uses to tell it. When you catch one, silently say: replaying. Then come back to your breath. If anything feels like too much, you can stop at any time. Take three minutes.

One question to take with you

In a sentence or two: what was the story your mind kept telling?

Listen and practise Day 1
