A taste of Day 1: Look at the crust
Welcome. Wonder isn't about travel or grand views. It's about looking at ordinary things a little longer. Over six days, we'll practise. Today we start with bread.
For instance, when bread is baked some parts are split at the surface, and these parts which thus open, and have a certain fashion contrary to the purpose of the baker's art, are beautiful in a manner, and in a peculiar way excite a desire for eating.Marcus Aurelius · Meditations, 3.2
George Long, 1862
Marcus noticed that baked bread splits and cracks in ways the baker never planned, and that the cracks are somehow beautiful and make us hungry. He looked at something familiar and let it be interesting. Today you do the same with one ordinary object. No clever thoughts needed. Just look as if you'd never seen it.
Try the reflection
Pick one ordinary thing within reach: a mug, a leaf, your own hand. Look at it for the whole time as if you've never seen it. Notice the texture, the small cracks, how the light sits on it. When your mind says, I know what this is, gently look again. Take two and a half minutes.
One question to take with you
What did you notice that you hadn't before?
Day 1 is free. Days 2–6 are planned for the iPhone app, coming soon. This is reflection, not medical advice.
