The Crate Can Wait

Rest needn't be earned by finishing or justified by what it makes possible tomorrow.

In a persimmon orchard in late afternoon, a middle-aged picker lies on a woven mat under a tree, one arm behind the head and a wide straw hat resting on the chest. Beside the picker sit a wooden crate partly filled with orange persimmons and a bamboo ladder leaning against the trunk.

A Japanese shin-hanga-style woodblock print of a picker resting on a straw mat under a persimmon tree in late afternoon, beside a half-filled crate of fruit and a leaning bamboo ladder. Cream lettering in the deep teal sky reads: Not a reward for finishing. Not fuel for tomorrow. The work can wait an hour.
