The Lock Flight

A boat higher in the locks may be heading somewhere else.

At dusk on a stepped canal lock flight, an older lock-keeper leans on a black-and-white balance beam while two narrowboats wait at different water levels, heading in opposite directions. The lower boat is loaded with firewood.

A hand-coloured etching of narrowboats at different levels on a canal lock flight, facing different directions and carrying different loads, with an older lock-keeper at a paddle. Brass lettering in the sky reads: Higher up the locks, but further along? That depends which way they're heading and what they carry.
